Sempai Floyd

I was born in Grass Valley, CA on January 1st 1985. I grew up in Nevada City, CA where I spent most of my youth chasing my two brothers around the woods. I began working as a dishwasher at Cirino's in Nevada City in 1999. I quickly started cooking and spent the next 6 years working as a chef at various restaurants in Nevada County. I graduated from Nevada Union High School in 2003. After high school I spent the next two years working as a flooring installer and cooking.

In 2005, with gentle prodding from Grandmaster (making statements like "most of my Black Belts have college degrees") I decided that it was time to go to college. With his blessings, I moved away from Nevada County for the first time in my life. I decided that I wanted to go to school for marine biology in beautiful Fort Bragg, CA. I was very involved in my studies, but most important to me was that I continue my studies in Jujutsu, so I traveled home every weekend to study at the Dojo. I spent some time working as a fisheries biologist studying endangered salmonids. In 2007, I graduated with an A.S. in marine science technology and was awarded the local Audubon society scholarship for outstanding science student.

I decided that I needed to continue my education but did not like being so far away from the Dojo so I moved to the closest university, Sacramento State, where I began my studies in biochemistry. I currently live in Sacramento, CA where I am working towards a B.Sc. in Biochemistry at Sacramento State. Additionally, I do research in a biochemical laboratory where I study site-mutated A-lipoproteins.

My journey with Grandmaster started in early 2003. I always knew that there was something special I was supposed to do with my life. When I was growing up I felt like there was something missing from me. I was a troubled teenager and I was surrounded by a world of drugs and lost people. I found it the day that I met my teacher, Grandmaster Crimi. I didn't know it at the time but I was about to embark on the most amazing journey of my life. My path to Black Belt has been the hardest thing that I have ever done and don't expect for a minute that it is going to stop being this way. From this difficulty has come amazing growth for me as a human being.

I have been taken places that I never thought existed and changed in ways that I never thought possible. Through the teachings and principles of Hikari Ryuza Ryu Jujutsu®, I have learned immensely about compassion, honor, loyalty, love, dedication, honesty and humility. I carry these principles in my heart and will continue to hold to them for the rest of my life. I have been blessed with a life path, a source of inspiration, and most importantly a real teacher.

Many times I felt as though I would never make it, but it made me more determined to change, to become a better person. I had a particularly hard time changing because I was so afraid. As Grandmaster says "Life is made up of ones fears and desires your growth as a human depends on over coming your fears so you can benefit from your desires." Since first beginning at the Dojo I knew what I wanted. I wanted to stand in that line next to Grandmaster; I wanted to be a Black Belt.

My training under Grandmaster has changed me profoundly. Becoming a Black Belt is the best thing that I have done with my life and I am privileged to be a Black Belt under Grandmaster Crimi. I am still working through some of the fears as is everyone, but being a Black Belt of Hikari Ryuza Ryu Jujutsu® definitely gives me an advantage! My life has been significantly impacted by my study of Hikari Ryuza Ryu ®. It has truly helped me to grow up into manhood. Being a Black Belt has given me the strength to truly be free, to have the confidence to know what I wanted from my life.

I hold a Shodan in Hikari Ryuza Ryu Jujutsu® / Danzan Ryu Jujutsu, the title of Sempai, as well as being a member of the Hikari Ryuza Ryu Yudansha Kai®. I have assisted in the training of Nevada County Law Enforcement and Correctional Officers but perhaps one of the most rewarding things for me has been to help train children.
