Dr. T. R. Crimi O.M.D. Hanshi

Shodai--Hikari Ryuza Ryu Jujutsu®

Shihan--Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, Goshin Ryu Jujutsu

For 45 + years Grandmaster Crimi has been passionately immersed in martial arts, dedicating his life to embody, develop, and protect the core of true budo. He is walking martial arts history. His resolve has been such that nothing has ever stood between him and his path as a martial artist. From his perspective the martial arts are not about the pursuit of achievements, rather a path of the heart. His path began in 1959, as a boy on his way to his piano lessons in Sparks, Nevada. Intensely curious by the sounds that came from the small Dojo next door, every day he would scratch a small chip off the window that was covered with white paint to get a better peek inside. What he finally saw fascinated him: huge beings with black belts moving inside the room, performing magic as it seemed to him. One day he was so enraptured with the class in progress that he didn't notice that one of the instructors had left the mat, until he heard a voice behind him, asking: "How can I help you?" He turned and found himself facing a black obi. The gentleman then invited the young boy inside to watch. From this moment on Dr.Crimi's love affair with the martial arts was ignited, and it has never wavered since. His studies during the four following years, from 1959 to 1963, brought him to the rank of yonkyu (green belt.)

In 1963 Dr. Crimi's family moved to Grass Valley, Ca. where he found a new Dojo in Sacramento, Ca. whereby karate was taught. Dr. Crimi hitchhiked twice a week to and from his classes. He moved to Sacramento, and received a Dojo Shodan in Kempo Karate in 1969. At this point in his martial arts studies Dr. Crimi knew he needed to move on. During a talk, both he and his instructor came to a conclusion. He needed to go in search of that "wise old sage on the mountain top:" a true master who would pose the ultimate challenge, an embodiment of the essence of martial arts. The following two years (1970-1972) took Dr. Crimi through a multitude of martial arts, including Hwarang Do, Tang Soo Do, Hapkido, Aikido, yet his quest was still unfulfilled.

His interest was peaked by an article pertaining to the "elite" of the martial arts world. This was in reference to Ju-Jutsu. He then found a seminar being taught in Reno, Nevada, by Professor Merlin "Bud" Estes, and attended. In Professor Estes, Dr. Crimi found his true master. As part of the ten years of training with his Master, Dr. Crimi studied Danzan Ryu JuJitsu at the S.J.J.C., earning his Shodan in 1974, and his Nidan in 1977. With permission and sponsorship from Professor Estes, he opened his own Dojo in Grass Valley, Ca. where Dr. Crimi founded Hikari Ryuza Ryu Do Kan ® , and Hikari Ryuza Ryu Jujutsu ® . Dr. Crimi was a private student of Professor Estes' for the last four years of Professor's life, traveling at least twice a week from Grass Valley to Chico, Ca. until Professor Estes' death in 1981. One-year prior to his teacher's passing, while receiving his Sandan, he was imparted these words: "Welcome aboard. How does it feel to be a servant to mankind for the rest of your life?" It is this devotion to serve with compassion, integrity and honor that has been Dr. Crimi's motivation throughout his life of martial arts. Dr.Crimi continues to teach Danzan Ryu Jujitsu, and Hikari Ryuza Ryu Jujutsu ®, broadening and deepening its range, with utmost dedication to cherish what was passed on to him.

To serve his community and those in need, Grandmaster Crimi developed several applications of martial art techniques for special circumstances. He has designed various Self Defense courses for the disabled. In order to provide a Self Defense course for people in wheelchairs and truly know their needs, The Grandmaster once confined himself in a wheelchair for over a month. In the past twenty-five years, one- thousand women have gone through the Women's Self Defense Course (Fujin Goshin No Maki) at the Hikari Ryuza Ryu Jujutsu Do Kan® .

Grandmaster Crimi has been teaching Hikari Ryuza Ryu Ju-Jutsu® for the last 31 years.
