Interview with Hailey
by Professor Shizumi
P: How old are you?
H: I’m 13.
P: What grade are you in?
H: 6th.
P: Do you have a favorite color?
H: (laughs) I guess, blue.
P: What about a number?
H: 3
P: Guess what? That’s my favorite number too!
P: When did you start training in Hikari Ryuza Bujutsu?
H: It was last year, sometime before school started.
P: What is your favorite roll?
H: Actually, I like Tachi-Ageru Yoko Chugaeri (Standing Side Somersault)
P: How about your favorite fall?
H: Chuegari Sutemi because it makes you slide more, even though you’re not supposed to.
P: And what is your favorite technique?
H: I’ve never had a favorite, but I like the one where you go under their arm and twist up (demonstrates)
P: Kata-Te Tori Shi?
H: Yes!
P: What are your reasons for studying Hikari Ryuza Bujutsu?
H: I was just always interested in Martial Arts and wrestling, so I thought I would try it and I liked it.
P: That sounds like why you started, but why do you continue to train?
H: Cause it’s a lot of fun and it teaches me to defend myself.
P: What are some of the important things you are learning?
H: To defend myself, self-discipline, Bujutsu
P: Why do you think I often choose you to assist me?
H: Because I pay attention and I don’t mess around as much.
P: If you wanted to invite a friend to Bujutsu, what would you say or do?
H: You should go to Bujutsu with me because you will learn self-defense and it is fun.
P: What is your favorite part of class?
H: I like coming here to learn and to see good people surrounding me and helping me.
P: Can you tell us something about yourself that maybe not everyone would know?
H: I like to swim, I swam for four years in Maui. I did wrestling for four years in Maui also, but the weird thing was when I came here and nobody was my size, so I couldn’t do it. (I tried to put weights in my jacket.) I ride a horse once a week. It’s actually jumping season, so I’m going to start jumping over little poles. And I love spaghetti!
P: What are 3 goals that you currently have?
H: I want to get good grades and I want to get really far in Bujutsu and horseback riding. This one is weird, but I like to stretch when I’m at home. Splits and there is this stretch called the Scorpion. (Demonstrates kicking leg up behind back and grabbing toes) – But I can’t do it yet.
P: How far do you want to go in your Bujutsu?
H: I was actually thinking about this the other day. I want to go through all the junior ranks before I try to go through the adult ranks.
P: So, what does that mean?
H: It means I want to go as far as I can.
P: Well how far is that?
H: Junior Black Belt.
P: Do you want to be an adult Black Belt?
H: Yes, of course; doesn’t everybody?
