Exceptional Student Jan 2018

Glen B.

Big congratulations are in order for Glen, the Hikari Ryuza Center’s newest “Student of the Quarter!” Glen has earned this recognition because of his tenacity. From when he started years ago to now, he has pushed himself tirelessly to become a better student and a better person. Glen’s unique perspectives have caused all of the students who’ve trained consistently with him to grow as well. He has really opened his heart and made some wonderful, genuine friendships with his classmates, which was not such an easy thing to do in the beginning. We interviewed him so everyone could get to know him a little better. Without further ado, we present: Glen!

Interview with Glen

by Sr Professor Shizumi Crimi

Interview with Glen ~ Student of the Quarter, January – March, 2018

P: How old are you?
G: Hmm… I am my previous age plus one, which was 13 plus one, so I am 14.

P: What grade are you in?
G: I am in 8th grade, which is my age minus 6.

P: When did you start training in Hikari Ryuza Bujutsu?
G: According to the log book I was training in mid February of 2014, but we could check the log book.

P: What is your favorite roll?
G: My favorite roll of any Shokyu or Jokyu Chugaeri is Tobi Mae Chugaeri (Jump Front Somersault) because it’s just fun to jump in the air.

P: How about your favorite fall?
G: Of the two lists is Jiyu Tobi Chugaeri Sutemi (Free Jump Somersault Fall), commonly referred to as the “straight over” because it’s nice to go into the air and land in roughly the same spot.

P: And what is your favorite technique?
G: My favorite technique off the lists on the wall is (stands up to go look at lists) Tora Katsugi on Oku because it’s fun to throw someone Seoi Nage while they’re going unconscious due to strangulation.

P: Do you have a favorite color?
G: Favorite color is… take my name, remove the L and add RE where the L was, which makes green.

P: What about a number?
G: My favorite number is 120x / (40x + 400 – 140) = 2. You whittle all that done and you get 13.

P: Can you tell us something about yourself that maybe not everyone would know?
G: That’s one I was prepared for. It’s that I secure virtual computers in a club called Cyber Patriots, which is a competition that you have to find like 30 security issues in some familiar and unfamiliar operating systems and then fix them.

P: What are your reasons for studying Hikari Ryuza Bujutsu?
G: My main reasons are to obtain my Black Belt, to reveal my true character and finally if someone tries to kidnap me to not be limited to just running inside and locking the door, but have some other options available.

P: What are 3 goals that you currently have?
G: 1) Obtain my junior Black Belt). 2) Never use credit cards in my life or have a car payment. 3) To succeed in education. That means doing better than the majority in school.

P: What are some of the important things you are learning in your Bujutsu?
G: Some interesting things. Plenty of new advanced techniques on the Shime list and some on Oku. Plenty of new exercises where you can try to improve your character and lastly confidence and perseverance.

P: Why do you think you were chosen as the Student of the Quarter?
G: I best represent the brown belt ranks. I mean I represent brown belt well, as very serious and a good achievement in Bujutsu.

P: If you wanted to invite a friend to Bujutsu, what would you say?
G: Ooohhh, that’s the hard one. This is tricky. I would say depending on the person. I would target the person who would fit well into this system and also talk about the type of stuff you learn, like you learn to defend yourself against grabs and be able to push yourself.

P: What is your favorite part of class?
G: My favorite part of class is that once we get on the mat and we stretch, after we open, the brown belts split off and we work on Shime and Oku.

P: How far do you want to go in your Bujutsu?
G: Why would I stop? If I could keep going, there’s no limit!
P: What rank can you imagine yourself as?
G: If I hit the Black Belt ranks I can imagine myself as Sr Grandmaster’s rank.

P: Is there anything else you would like to add before we conclude this interview?
G: There is nothing else I would like add except that I can imagine myself as a junior Black Belt in the coming years.
